The Beekeeper of Aleppo story of Nuri Ibrahim and his wife, Afra, who was blinded in an incident during the Syrian civil war, cling to their home while everyone else flees the bombings and violence. They are emotionally devastated by the loss and destruction of their neighborhood but decide to seek asylum in the U.K. after soldiers attempt to forcefully recruit Nuri. They travel through harsh conditions in Turkey and Greece, waiting in camps for the proper paperwork and meeting more refugees along the way. Nuri is determined to find his cousin Mustafa in the U.K., where the two men can return to their beloved work as beekeepers. Afra reckons with the reality that she will not be able to continue her life as an artist because of her blindness, and the couple recall painful memories as they are drawn into the agonizing experiences of other refugees. Lefteri perceptively and powerfully documents the horrors of the Syrian civil war and the suffering of innocent civilians. Readers will find this deeply affecting for both its psychological intensity and emotional acuity.follows the story of Nuri and Afra Ibrahim, a Syrian couple who flee Aleppo to reunite with members of their family who have reached the UK safely. While we learn early on that they do reach the UK, where they’re seeking asylum, their journey is fraught with dangers and tribulations prior to this. We read as they make their way from the devastating ruins of their home in Aleppo, to Turkey and then to Greece, all the while reconciling who they used to be and those who they have lost with their current day realities.
While there are many harrowing or difficult scenes in the novel, this book is also an incredible testament to the human spirit. Reading the ways in which Nuri and Afra find strength in each other like a touchstone throughout their journey was beautiful. While this is a story about the effects of war and displacement, it’s also a simple and compelling story about the relationship between a man and his wife. While Afra is outwardly wounded, as she has lost her sight following the loss of their young son, Sami. Nuri is psychologically altered by all he has experienced and had to witness, he finds it hard to feel much at all. Their story is told with empathy and compassion, it never felt false or overly sentimental to me. Harsh life and heartbreak journey for to the all who deserves to live an ordinary life home kids and better opportunities I admire the writers who read the story of any human as it was happen without any confusing information and political agenda. all respect to Christy Lefteri she did great work
